Destinations in Australia

I've discovered that it's a real challenge to write about "destinations" in my own country. It's so big and so ancient - the landscape is very different from Europe or USA or even New Zealand, with their high, jagged mountain ranges, tall dark pine forests and vivid green grasslands.

Where to start? I guess I can start at home: I live in the most beautiful city in the country - Sydney! I can walk across the road outside my home, catch a bus that will take me across the Harbour Bridge, and if I want, stroll across the Quay and be on the Opera House forecourt less than half an hour after leaving my front door. I can meander through the wonderful Botanic Gardens or hop on a bus for the short ride to the iconic Bondi Beach - a great place to visit during the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The Zoo with easily the best view in the world is a ferry trip away. Even the local park, down on the riverbank, is a gem of a spot.

But Sydney is just one jewel. We have great coastlines, with unspoilt beaches, coral reefs and rocky cliffs. We have mountains - well maybe the rest of the world would think of them as hills. We have mighty rivers, though in the past 20 years they have suffered greatly reduced flow through drought and the effects of irrigation schemes - and we have vast deserts. In fact most of our country is taken up by desert. It would take a lifetime to see everything Australia has to offer.

Most of our travel in Australia so far has been by road, mainly around the eastern and southern States. You can read about those journeys in the Way to Go! section, and I have included the link below. There are some great things to see by rail and ferry as well, and those links are also listed below.

If you would rather take a quick look at some scenic destinations in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, you will find several listed in our Travel Photos.
