Seeing how different countries tackle the challenges of running a zoo is always interesting. City-based zoos tend to have mixture of traditional and more modern enclosures - Berlin Zoo, Artis in Amsterdam, Denver Zoo, the National Zoo in Washington, and San Diego Zoo come to mind. Then there are the ones located more remotely and so able to spread over a wider area. These can implement a "free range" look - Western Plains and Werribee in NSW and Victoria Australia, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and Jurong in Singapore ("free range" for birds).

Smaller zoos can be just as rewarding as the large ones - Frankfurt zoo has a wonderful acquarium section. However, we still think that our own local zoo, Taronga in Sydney, has to take the prize for the zoo with the most spectacularly beautiful setting in the world. Don't miss it if you visit Australia.
