We've done lots of road trips in USA. I reckon we have probably covered about 60,000 miles so far and it has been easy travel on fantastic roads with great scenery. Maybe some of the trips we have done there would fit into your plans?
If you are planning a driving tour in USA, one website you really should check out is the national Scenic Byways site. It has a comprehensive range of information, including maps and photos, covering all of the roads designated as scenic, all over America. I'd also strongly recommend getting one of the Guides to National Parks - Fodor does one, so does National Geographic (this one has great pictures, but not as many Parks are covered as the other one).
We have also done a bit of driving on home turf (Australia) and in nearby New Zealand, so you will see some pages there for those, but our grand plan is to save the close-to-home places for when we get tired of those long-haul flights.
